Alsea LagottosItalian truffle dogs, raised on an Oregon coastal farm.

Alsea Lagottos raises AKC and FCI registered Lagotto Romagnolo puppies from Italian Vicale and Alsea bloodlines on an organic coastal farm in Waldport, Oregon. One to two litters a year, each puppy placed from our waitlist with a family we get to know.

After decades breeding and showing AKC Chihuahuas, Standard Poodles, and Oorang Airedales, Karen Kennedey launched the Lagotto program in 2019.

Meet the Lagotto Romagnolo

The breed

The Lagotto Romagnolo comes from the Romagna region of Italy, where it worked the marshes as a water retriever and truffle hunter before becoming the country's truffle hunting dog. That history produced a rare combination: a keen nose, a quick mind, and a deep attachment to its people.

01

Low-shedding, curly coat

A dense, wool-like curl that sheds very little. Regular grooming keeps this distinctive coat healthy and mat-free.

02

Built for scent work

Italy's truffle dog brings a keen nose, a quick mind, and a love of work. Affectionate and eager to learn, they thrive in active homes.

03

Health on paper

Our breeding dogs are DNA tested and clear for more than 220 inherited conditions covered by their panel. DNA testing does not rule out every health concern. Ask Karen about the parents' test reports and any available hip, patella, and eye evaluations.

Questions we hear most

Do Lagotti shed?

They shed very little, but no dog is allergen free. Their curly coat needs regular trimming and care. Ask about spending time with our adult dogs before you commit.

How many litters a year?

We keep it small — one to two litters each year, with close attention to every puppy.

Can I come visit the farm?

Contact Karen to discuss meeting the dogs here on our 20+ acre farm in Waldport, Oregon.

How much is a puppy, and how long is the wait?

Puppies are $3,000, with a $500 deposit to reserve your place on the waitlist. The deposit can be refundable — ask Karen about the terms and the expected wait for an upcoming litter.

Are Lagotti good with children and other pets?

A well-socialized Lagotto can be a playful family companion. We discuss your children, other pets, and daily routine to match each puppy's temperament to your household.

How much grooming and exercise do they need?

The curly coat needs regular trimming. Active days, scent games, swimming, and work for their nose help keep a Lagotto engaged. Discuss your routine with Karen.

Can my puppy learn to hunt truffles?

Yes. The Pacific Northwest has native truffles, and some of our puppies are started on truffle scent before they leave the farm. Ask Karen about started puppies.

What if we live far away?

Puppies are not shipped on commercial planes. Travel home is arranged by each puppy's new family — car pickups are the most common, and a farm stay can be arranged around pickup.

When can I meet a puppy?

Ask Karen about upcoming litters, the waitlist, and visit timing when you get in touch.
